Opening Ceremonies

I worked from 5pm Thursday through till 10am Friday, went home and slept till 5:30pm, and then came back in early so that Rickey (Comm's Manager) could attend the Opening Ceremonies.  The show was spectacular, and I know CBC aired it live, while NBC will air it tonight in primetime.

Team Canada enters the Fisht Stadium!

If you were planning to watch, and don't want to see any more spoiler images, you might want to wait until after you've watched the show before reading the rest of this post.

Team Canada - led by Hayley Wickenheiser!

I thought the show was pretty cool, and liked that they had minimal production before bringing in the athletes so that they could watch the show.

Looking good, eh?

Team Canada has 220 athletes, and they looked great, and got a great reception from the crowd.

The show contained a lot of aerial elements and effects, and video projections on the floor (as has now been done in several games).

I'm not going to describe all the remaining photos, or try to tell you what transpired, but instead, I'm going to give you some "Fun Facts" about the Opening Ceremonies from a statistical point of view.

There were 3.8km of track in the roof of the stadium used to fly more than 80 large scenic elements.

The horse element above, pulling a sun, is 66m long!

At one point, they had 59 scenic pieces flying simultaneously.

There are more than 385 rigging points producing a 310-ton load on the roof.

Vladimir Tretiak, familiar to Canadians as the amazing Russian goalie from the 1972 Hockey Summit Series, was one the torch lighters.

The stage on the stadium floor covered over 8,600 square metres, and contained 25 lifts and 18 traps.

The sound system included over 500 speakers producing more than 1 million watts.  The cast and crew members wore 15,000 in-ear monitors during the ceremonies.

The video system required 132 projectors and 140 TV cameras, and it required more than 9,000 people to stage the Opening Ceremonies, including 3000 cast members, and almost 2,700 volunteers.

The fireworks display afterwards seemed to last forever!

Last note: Every member of the audience received a disc to wear around their neck that could glow in multiple colours.  The disks were all remotely controlled by the venue, so that they could light up different parts of the crowd in different colors to create patterns and images!  So cool!

Afterwards, they glow when you tap them, and change colour each time.

Hope you enjoyed the Opening Ceremonies!   More for you tomorrow!
